How a humpback whale swim works at Ningaloo
The park authority (DBCA) states on its current snorkelling page that swimming with humpback whales is only possible as part of a matching tour. You cannot join a humpback from the beach or from your own boat. You can watch whales on your own, but you must keep at least 100 m away from the animal.
A swim tour is not the same as a whale watching trip. Operators put a small group in the water when the whales and the sea allow it. Whether that happens on your day depends on the animals and the conditions. No tour can promise an encounter, and this page does not either.

When is the humpback season?
Four published time frames answer four different questions.
| Source | What it describes | Months |
|---|---|---|
| Park authority, Marine Park page | Whales present along the coast | June to November |
| Park authority, nature calendar | Migration in general | August to December |
| Ningaloo Discovery | Humpback swim tours | August to October |
| Three Islands | Humpback swim tour | August to mid-October |
Whales can be in the area for longer than the swim tours run. None of these ranges is a promise that a tour will find whales on a given day. If you want a swim, plan inside the operator's own dates and keep a spare day.

Rules that apply to your trip
Operators set some rules, the park authority sets others. Keep them apart.
Licensed operators only
Swimming with humpbacks is tied to a tour with the right permission. Ask the operator for the current rules before you pay, because licence numbers and conditions can change. The swim program began as a trial in 2016, and a 2024 publication by the park authority describes it as ongoing.
No swimming with mothers and calves
Ningaloo Discovery states in its FAQ that swimming with mothers and calves is not allowed. Watching them from the boat is possible. Do not read an advertising text from another operator as permission to do otherwise.
Small groups
Three Islands lists a maximum of 14 swimmers on the tour and water groups of 7 guests. Other operators may differ.
Age
Three Islands sells its humpback swim from age 13. That is the operator's rule, not a general legal age limit.
Watching on your own
If you watch from your own boat or from the shore, stay at least 100 m from the whale. Swimming with it is not part of private watching.
Example: one operator's swim tour in 2026
Price and terms as published by Three Islands in October 2026. Other operators have their own.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Price | A$600, from age 13 |
| Season | August to mid-October |
| Group size | Up to 14 swimmers, water groups of 7 |
| No swim in the water | No free repeat trip and no refund. After an unsuccessful water encounter, a second trip costs 50 percent less. |
| Deposit | 20 percent for regular bookings |
| Balance due | 14 days before departure for 1 to 8 guests, 21 days for larger groups |
Weather, minimum numbers and official access can change whether a tour runs. The no-sighting rules of whale shark tours do not carry over to humpback tours. Read the terms of the exact product you book.
Watching humpbacks from land
The lookout at the base of the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse has a view over the North West Cape, the Ningaloo coast, the Muiron Islands and Exmouth. The local visitor centre mentions humpback watching there during the migration from June to November. Sightings are not guaranteed, and you should not plan on a visit to the tower.
Whale sharks are a different animal with a different season. Park authority sources give March to July or March to August for them. The Coral Bay guide covers the southern end of the reef, and the page on whale shark swims covers the Exmouth side.

Planning around the swim season
Long-term averages for Learmonth Airport, which is not a forecast.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Average rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| August | 26.6°C | 12.3°C | 11.8 mm |
| September | 29.7°C | 13.9°C | 2.4 mm |
| October | 33.0°C | 16.5°C | 1.4 mm |
Ask the operator what gear is provided. Pickup rules differ: Ningaloo Discovery collects guests at Exmouth accommodation but not at campgrounds in Cape Range National Park. Campers meet the boat at the Tantabiddi Boat Ramp. The Exmouth Boat Harbour lies about 2 km south of the town centre, and repair works there can cause temporary restrictions.
After Cyclone Narelle in April 2026, the Shire of Exmouth asks visitors to confirm their accommodation before they arrive. See where to stay in Exmouth and how to get there.
Humpback whale swim at Ningaloo: frequently asked questions
Can you swim with humpback whales at Ningaloo?
Yes, but only on a tour with the right permission. The park authority says swimming with humpbacks is only possible as part of such a tour. Whether you get in the water on your day depends on the whales and the sea.
When is the best time for a humpback swim?
Operators advertise August to October, and one lists August to mid-October. Whales can be along the coast from June to November, but swim tours run in a shorter window. Check the operator's dates.
How much does a humpback swim cost?
One operator lists A$600 per person from age 13 for 2026. Other operators and products will differ, and a listed price does not show free seats on your date.
What happens if I do not swim with a whale?
It depends on the operator. With the example above there is no free repeat trip and no refund, but after an unsuccessful water encounter a second trip costs 50 percent less. Read the terms before you book.
Can children swim with humpbacks?
That is set by the operator. The example above sells the swim from age 13. It is an operator rule, not a general legal limit, so ask before you book.
Can I see humpbacks without a tour?
Yes. You can watch from the shore or from your own boat, as long as you stay at least 100 m from the whale. The Vlamingh Head lookout is a land option during the migration.
